St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum
The climb to the observation deck may seem daunting to some, but the challenge of completely the journey to the top makes it worthwhile. The tower also has eight landings, with places to rest and let people pass if you start to feel tired. As I made my way up the steps, I began to forget the slight soreness in my legs as I looked around. The windows located on each floor serve as an exciting preview to the feature presentation that awaits you at the top of the tower. Once I reached the top, the view of the city was truly astounding. If climbing to the top isn’t for you, the beauty of the lighthouse can also be experienced from If you are interested in learning more about history, a walk through the Keeper’s House Museum, located in front of the lighthouse, will provide this opportunity. I spent only a few minutes in the museum and left with a much better understanding of the US Coast Guard and shipwreck archaeology. The trip through the museum coupled with the climb to the top of the lighthouse left me feeling as though I had experienced St. Augustine in a new and interesting way. As a frequent visitor to St. Augustine, I am always looking for new ways to experience all that the historical city has to offer. The perspective of the city from the top of the St. Augustine lighthouse offered just that. Completed in 1874, the lighthouse stands 165 feet tall and offers a breathtaking view for those who are willing to climb the 219 steps to the observation deck located at the top of the lighthouse tower.
ground level as you walk through a lush, green, pathway along the grounds. If you wish to hear the history behind the lighthouse, you can take part in the "Keeper’s Audio Tour." The tour provides you with a handheld audio device that shares facts about lighthouses while leading you on a walk through the lighthouse grounds. As I walked around the pathway, the visitors listening to the tour seemed to be having just as much fun as the ones that were climbing the steps of the lighthouse.
