Despite the fact that I have been coming to St. Augustine at least once a year since I was nine there are many local eateries that I have never had the opportunity to try. While in St. Augustine recently, I actually walked into a place that I’m sure I’ve walked past at least a dozen times. The Bunnery, located right on St. George Street in downtown St. Augustine was the site of one of the best lunches I’ve had in the historic city.
Upon entering, I was immediately greeted with the smell of fresh baked goods and coffee. If
the scent wasn’t enough to get my attention, the baked goods stacked perfectly in the glass pastry case located at the front of the restaurant had me hooked. The Bunnery bakes pastries daily and offers everything from cookies, to muffins, to cupcakes and croissants that would rival anything from a local Parisian café. I took a mental note of the Silver Dollar Cookie, what seemed to be a take on a Snickerdoodle, and reminded myself to pick one up along with an Orange Juice and Pecan Muffin on my way out.
For lunch I ordered the Chicken Walnut Sandwich. The chicken salad was made from scratch and served inside a freshly baked croissant with potato chips on the side. Although this meal could have been a simple, the added elements like the pineapple in the chicken salad made the meal unique and delicious. In addition to the cold sandwiches, The Bunnery also offers paninis, burgers, and salads. All of the options sounded delicious and if I wasn’t so stuffed from the sandwich I probably would have ordered Pamela’s Favorite salad; a salad of mixed greens, turkey breast, swiss cheese, home-made sweet and sour cucumbers, carrots, cranberries, candied pecans, tossed with a honey-citrus vinaigrette.
As I left pleasantly stuffed, I was already planning on coming back to the café the next time I was in St. Augustine. Although only open for breakfast and lunch, The Bunnery is a great place for anyone looking for homemade and good quality food. Even if you aren’t looking for a full meal, a pastry or one of the coffee drinks would make for a great midday pick-me-up. Whether you are looking for breakfast, lunch, or a really big cookie, The Bunnery offers great food right in the middle of a great area.
